My Current Skincare Routine
Let's face it, acne is the worst. For years I suffered from painful hormonal cystic acne all over my face and sometimes chest and back. To be honest, it hindered me in more ways than one and severely affected my confidence. Last year, I started on Accutane. I'll save the details on my four-month journey on this intense drug for another post! For now, I wanted to talk about my current skincare routine and how I maintain my glowing skin.
Although my hormonal cystic acne is gone, I still suffer from breakouts here and there. Usually from falling asleep in my makeup -- a terrible habit that I'm having trouble breaking -- or if it's around that time of the month. Here's what I use to ward off those annoying bumps:
I hate taking off my makeup at night so I opt for a cleanser that helps me get the job done. Glossier's Milk Jelly Cleanser conditioning face wash does just that in the most gentle and moisturizing way. Simply apply a pump to your hands and massage onto damp skin then rinse with warm weather.
Next, I use an acne cleanser to help get into my pores and fight off acne-causing bacteria. Dermologica's Clearing Skin Wash is my holy grail acne product. I use a pea-sized amount mornings and nights to wash my face and neck. This cleanser is really powerful and can leave your skin feeling dry and sometimes red afterward. So be gentle when applying and watch out for flakiness.
I follow up my cleansers with a toner. I use Thayers' Witch Hazel Aloe Vera Formula alcohol-free toner in the Rose Petal Scent daily. Simply squirt a little on a cotton pad and swipe over your face. It's refreshing as f-ck and helps calm my skin's redness from my acne cleanser.
If I'm having a breakout I'll switch my daily toner out for Glossier's Solution Exfoliating Skin Perfector. A little goes a long way, so don't go crazy. The smell isn't the best, but it gets the job done and dries up my pimples very fast.
Last but definitely not least, I close out my skincare routine with a moisturizer. In case you were wondering, I have oily acne prone skin. By the time I'm done with cleansing and toning, my skin feels "normal" so applying a moisturizer doesn't feel gross or like something I can skip. I use Aveeno's Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer twice a day. One full pump is good enough for my entire face.
If I'm having a breakout, I'll follow up with dabbing tea tree oil on my problem areas. No, putting oil on my oily skin doesn't create more problems. Tea tree oil is a powerful acne-fighting agent and helps dry up my pimples overnight!
