My Curly Hair Routine featuring Shea Moisture
When it comes to my curly hair, I tend to keep my routine quick and simple. I don't like to fuss with products (or my curls for that matter) so I stick to what I know and incorporate new items into the mix very slowly. My all-time favorite curly hair staples are my Shea Moisture Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser, Curl and Style Milk, Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and Frizz-Free Curl Mousse all from their Coconut and Hibiscus line. I restocked recently on all four and thought to give my (long awaited) curly hair routine!
Step One: Co-Wash
I shampoo my hair once a week for a deep cleanse. On days when I'm co-washing, I like to use my Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Co-wash Conditioning Cleanser. It's sooo good! The smell is amazing but the way it makes my hair feel takes the cake. This lightweight conditioner removes dirt and product build-up without stripping my hair of its natural oils. I apply a generous amount to my roots and work the product into my scalp in circular motions. I mainly focus on my scalp, but will bring the product down towards my ends right before I rinse.
After washing, I apply a deep conditioner and detangle my hair. I'm not married to any particular deep conditioner at the moment. So if you have any recommendations drop them in the comments below! When I'm finished detangling I place a shower cap on my head for 10-15 mins to let the conditioner soak into my hair. During this time I handle the rest of my business in the shower!
Step Two: Apply Curl and Style Milk
After I rinse out my deep conditioner, I apply Shea Moisture's Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Style Milk while I'm still in the shower. I use it as a leave-in treatment and find that it works best when I apply it while my hair is still wet. It helps get out any leftover tangles while conditioning and restoring body and shine to my hair. Then, I lightly wrap my hair in a t-shirt to soak up excess water and head to my room to finish up my routine.
Step Three: Apply Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Next, I apply Shea Moisture's Coconut and Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Hands down THE best product in my arsenal. It restores moisture to my curls, reduces frizz, and creates a gorgeous shine without weighing my hair down leaving my curls looking super healthy and bouncy. I'm literally obsessed with the results!
This is the point where I will begin to style my hair. I'll twist any strands that look like they need a little help forming a curl, lay my baby hairs down, and figure out if I want a part or not. In general, I don't part my hair. I let it dry however it decides to fall.
Step Four: Apply Frizz-Free Curl Mousse
Next, I apply Shea Moisture's Coconut and Hibiscus Frizz-Free Curl Mousse. I like to use this mousse instead of a gel as the last step to help define my curls. It doesn't leave my hair feeling sticky, crunchy, or flaky. I love it! I pump a little in my hands, flip my head down, and SCRUNCH my curls. If needed, I'll spray my hair with a little water and repeat this step.
Step Five: Dry
On days when I'm in the house or on warmer weather days, I'll let my hair air dry. However, If I'm going out and need to look pulled together, or if it's cold outside I'll diffuse my hair with my Curly Co diffuser. Check out my Diffuser 101 post to see how I do so.
Step Six: Apply Oil + Fluff
Once my hair is dry I apply whatever oil I reach for first. I'm trying to become better at becoming well-versed on all of the different types of oils and their benefits. But for the time being, I don't discriminate on any. Next, I pick out my curls from the roots ONLY as to not disturb my curl pattern and all of my hard work. Then ta-dah! All finished.
